What Is BPM and Why Does It Matter?

BPM stands for Beats Per Minute — the fundamental measure of a song's tempo, or how fast it moves. It counts how many regular beat pulses occur in one minute. A song at 120 BPM has two beats per second; one at 60 BPM has one beat per second.

How Automatic BPM Detection Works

AudioKit's BPM Detector analyzes your audio file algorithmically to find the tempo. The process involves several steps:

  1. Onset Detection: The algorithm identifies transient events in the audio — moments where the audio energy suddenly increases, indicating the start of a new beat or musical event.
  2. Inter-Onset Interval (IOI) Analysis: The time gaps between detected onsets are measured and analyzed statistically.
  3. Tempo Hypothesis: The most consistent interval between onsets gives the tempo. If beats occur every 0.5 seconds, the BPM is 60 ÷ 0.5 = 120 BPM.
  4. Octave Error Correction: The algorithm checks for common doubling/halving errors (120 BPM might be detected as 60 or 240) and selects the most musically reasonable value.
