What Is an Audio Looper?
An audio looper is a tool that repeats a section of audio a specified number of times, creating a longer file from a shorter loop. This is fundamental to music production (where loops form the building blocks of tracks), practice (musicians repeat a difficult section over and over), and content creation (where a short musical clip needs to fill a longer video).
AudioKit's Audio Looper lets you take any audio file, set the number of repetitions, optionally apply a crossfade to smooth the loop boundary, and download the extended result — all without any software or uploading your file to a server.
What Is a Seamless Loop?
A seamless (or perfect) loop is one where you can't hear the join between the end of one repetition and the start of the next. This requires two things:
- Matching audio levels at the loop boundary: If the audio fades out at the end but starts loud at the beginning, the jump will be audible.
- Zero-crossing alignment: Audio waveforms cross zero amplitude periodically. Cutting at a zero-crossing prevents a sudden click or pop at the edit point.
For music that doesn't naturally loop, a crossfade is the solution: the end of the loop gradually fades out while the beginning fades in simultaneously, blending them together. This masks the join completely.
How to Create a Seamless Loop with AudioKit
- Upload your audio file — ideally a clip that has been trimmed to a musically complete length (1, 2, 4, or 8 bars)
- Set the number of repetitions (how many times the loop plays)
- Enable crossfade and set the crossfade duration (50–200ms works for most music)
- Preview the result to check for clicks at the loop point
- Download your looped audio file
Practical Uses for Audio Looping
Music Production: Create a 30-second or 1-minute loop file from a 4-bar pattern for use as background music, a sample, or a reference track.
Practice Aid: Loop a difficult musical passage so you can play along repeatedly without having to restart. This is far more efficient than manually replaying a section.
Video Content: Background music for YouTube videos often needs to fill a specific duration. Loop a short track to create the exact length you need.
Ambient Audio: Create long ambient soundscapes from short atmospheric recordings. An ocean wave sample looped seamlessly can fill hours.
Game Audio: Game background music must loop seamlessly for as long as a player remains in a scene. AudioKit's looper is perfect for testing loop points.
Tips for Better Loops
- Trim your audio to an exact musical length before looping — 1, 2, or 4 bars at the song's BPM
- Use our Audio Trimmer to get the perfect loop region first
- Always use crossfade if the audio doesn't naturally loop
- Preview in your media player after downloading to confirm the loop is seamless
